What is Depression?

Depression is defined as a set of mental disorders and/or physical reactions that tend to affect the quality of your life. It may be mild or severe depending on the person. Depression is described as being characterised by fatigue, loss of interest in activities, low self-esteem, irritability, guilt, and loneliness. It can also interfere with normal activities.

 Mood disorders cause adverse effects in terms of your health and well-being. Depression is associated with poor mental and physical health, which can affect your state of mind. For example, it is linked to an increased risk of coronary heart disease and other related cardiovascular diseases. This contributes to a higher incidence of death due to heart disease.

 Physical health is affected by depression. This is because depression can contribute to hypertension and obesity. Women are more prone to depression than men. Depression can also lead to high blood pressure. Some studies have shown that after controlling for age, race, and family history, women with depression had a greater risk of having a hypertensive episode.

 Depressed people experience symptoms such as lack of sleep, muscle pain, fatigue, and weight gain. Some reports claim that the depressed individual experiences the same symptoms as a smoker. Other symptoms include a decreased sex drive, and increased feelings of guilt, hopelessness, and irritability.

 For some depressed individuals, their emotional state may change throughout the day. They may have a low mood during the day but have bouts of elevated moods throughout the day, especially during the evening.

 Some of the symptoms of depression may vary depending on the stage in the disorder. In general, there are two stages. In the first stage, the person has a transient feeling of sadness or grief.

 During the second stage, the person feels sad for a longer period of time. Symptoms include difficulty sleeping, loss of appetite, feelings of worthlessness, agitation, increased and/or decreased body temperature, decreased sexual drive, and feelings of helplessness.

 The primary and most serious danger of depression is that it will interfere with the emotional condition of a person. The worst thing is that depression can often lead to suicidal thoughts. If you feel that your life is suffering from depression, there are signs and symptoms of depression that you should look out for.

 Feelings of loneliness and isolation are common. You may find yourself isolated from friends and family and/or unhappy at work because of the way that you feel.

 However, it is important to recognise that this is not a major problem and does not occur very often. As it goes away and gradually dissipates, you may notice small instances of sadness, frustration, or discouragement. However, the underlying depression remains so you should continue to take your treatment.

 The signs and symptoms of depression can range from minor to severe. So when you notice these signs and symptoms, it is important to consult your doctor.

 Recognising these symptoms may help you detect a condition. It is often best to get treatment rather than ignoring the problem.
